“It’s five AM, I have to wake up and attend the San Diego Classic Triathlon. I am feeling mixed emotions, excitement that the day is finally here, and scared that I won’t do that well, but most of all excitement that all of my  hard work is finally going to pay off.” -Emilia Perez Rocha ‘18.

This year the Academy of Our Lady of Peace rallied a team to participate in the San Diego Classic Triathlon held in Liberty Station on September 10, 2016. This is the first of its kind in OLP history. Over twenty OLP students, parents, teachers, and other family members  participated in biking, running, or swimming. In total, participants biked about 22 kilometers, swam 750 meters, and ran five kilometers. This was the ultimate fitness test.

The team was led by Coach Sally Bottger who suffered an unfortunate accident which landed her in the hospital just days before the race. Sadly, she was not able to participate in the race that she had been training so hard for. She was released one day before the event and was able to support her team from the sidelines. Once all OLP participants had crossed the finish line, special arrangements were made to have them gather to walk Coach Bottger over the finish line, where she received her medal and a few seconds of fame.

A highlight of the event was that three of the OLP teams placed, receiving awards for finishing in the top out of the entire race. The first three girls on the running course to finish the race were OLP students Adriana Marin ‘18, Diana Arce ‘18, and Maggie Mcnamara ‘19.  At the end of the day, everyone headed home (no doubt sore), feeling like a champion with a medal in hand.
