Man-made star launched into orbit for 9 months to create a sense of community throughout the world.

Peter Beck, founder and CEO of Rocket Lab, was inspired to start a project that would emphasize unity after seeing so much devastation throughout our world. Beck also wanted something that would serve as a reminder of our place in the universe. Although we are small and at times feel useless, we are capable of great things when we acknowledge each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

The geodesic sphere is made of 65 highly reflective panels but the star itself is only about one meter in diameter. The star spins rapidly and reflects the light of the sun making it look like a flashing star. Despite its small size, it is visible everywhere in the world at specific times a day, which can be tracked on their website.

No matter where you are in the world, rich or in poverty, in conflict or at peace, everyone will be able to see the bright, blinking Humanity Star”

— Peter Beck

After the star’s initial launch there was controversy about it possibly creating more pollution or interfering with important satellites, but the company has confirmed that after nine months it will drop out of orbit and dissolve before hitting land on Earth.
