Dream Big and Conquer

By: Julia Espinosa

By being a daughter and niece of two former “soccer-star” alumni, Claudine Mattos Espinosa (‘85) and Lena Vessel King (‘85), I have had the wonderful opportunity to follow OLP soccer since I was a very young. Considering the fact in 1984 my very own mother and aunt won CIF making history as well placing the first ever OLP banner on the wall, this questioned constantly pondered in my mind. Who would take OLP one step further into making history? Who knew that my senior year the OLP soccer team would win CIF and State furthering the OLP soccer history significantly?

From a team that was made up of 11 seniors, 7 juniors, 3 sophomores and 1 freshman, they were able to conquer the dreams of beating and setting that record.

Junior, Lily Morales described that the game as,

“One of the most intense and exciting games ever! We were making history, and bring the first state championship home to OLP. We knew everyone was here to watch us win and we weren’t going to let them down!”

Needless to say, the game resulted in a suspenseful 3-2 win, making OLP history.
